//I’ve decided, because I can and I’m full of feels that I need to let out, that I am going to talk a bit about the latest episode of “Once Upon a Time”, mentioning snippets of the other episodes. This will mainly be centered around Jefferson and Grace.
First, let’s go back to his first appearance in the show- “Hat Trick” (1x17). In that episode we see Jefferson channel his sorrow into anger and- you guessed it- madness. He goes so far as to drug Emma and kid-nap Snow/Mary-Margaret. Then he just holds them hostage until Emma makes a hat that will send him back to the Enchanted Forest. This is when we really see who Jefferson is- a father. All he wants to do is be with his daughter, but he can’t. He takes all that sadness and regret piling up inside him and he turns it into straight out anger. He almost shoots Emma! Luckily- or not so luckily for Jefferson- Mary-Mararet shoves him out a window! The next time we see Jefferson, he’s helping Regina poison Emma all so he can be with Grace again, but the whole plan backfires when Henry eats the apple turnover. And, feeling betrayed, Jefferson, in return, decides to ruin Regina’s secret and release Belle from the mental hospital.
It practically kills me how…scared Jefferson was to see Grace face-to-face. He hid behind a post because he was so frightened and worried she was going to hate him for leaving her. But if we go back to “We Are Both” (2x02), we see David/Charming rescue Jefferson from that car he’d been trapped in for who knows how long. If you watch that scene again, you can see him holding onto the stuffed rabbit he had in the car. He had been holding onto that rabbit the whole time he’d been in the car. He held the rabbit, waiting for Grace; waiting to be with his daughter again. And when he finds the drawing Grace puts up that reads, “Have you seen my Papa?”, that really just hit him, straight in the heart. He must have felt so…confused. He must have been wondering why she was looking for him when, all this time, he had been the one to leave her.
In tonight’s episode we can see Jefferson at the bus stop, waiting to see Grace, taking Henry’s advice and going to see her. As I said before, he was scared. He was scared she’d hate him and not want to go with him. See, to Jefferson, Grace was his life. He had no one else and being separated from Grace killed him on the inside and that’s the worst kind of death: feeling dead but still being cursed to be physically alive. Even when he calls Grace’s name and she stops and turns, all that fear is rolling around in his stomach, tying knots. But finally when she smiles and runs to him did his worry disappear. She had been looking for him, but he was the one to find her.
Now all we can do, Oncers and other fandoms alike, is wait and hope that we see more of Jefferson and Grace’s story.
